This chess tutorial is mainly designed to teach people the rules of chess in a simple and easy to understand method.

Chess is a game that is played by two opposing players on a square board composing 64 of alternating light and dark squares in eight equally divided rows and columns. The vertical columns on a chess board are called the files and the ranks are for the horizontal rows. The chess game match is won when one of the player maneuvers his or her chess pieces to checkmate the opponents’ King.

Each opposing players starts with eight pawns and eight key pieces: one king, one queen. Two rooks, two knights, and two bishops. The two opposing players are referred to as black and white regardless of the actual color of the chess pieces. The initial position of the chess board must be that light colored square should be at the bottom right corner of each player. The white pieces are set up in this order (from left to right) rook, knight, bishop, queen, king, bishop, knight, rook. The black chess pieces are set up on the opposite side and both the queens are on the same file because black queens take the dark colored square and white queen takes the light colored square. The pawns are positioned on the second ranks of each player.

The white is always the first one to move and both the players continue to alternate turns. Each chess piece moves uniquely. The king can be moved at one square in any direction at a time and capture the same way. It cannot move to a square where he can be considered attacked. The queen can be moved at any number of squares in any direction but may not pass through other chess pieces in the process. The rook moves in vertical or horizontal direction and also cannot pass through other chess pieces. The Bishop can move in any number of squares in diagonal direction. While the knight moves in an “L”, shape direction and can jump over any other chess pieces. The pawns can only move forward in one direction. However, when moving from the initial position, you can choose to move it in two squares or just one square. It also captures diagonally and not the same way as it moves.

The main objective of the game is to checkmate the opposing player’s king. Checkmate is when a king cannot escape the attack of the enemy’s piece and is impossible for that player to get out of that attack. This ends the game. Whoever captures a king wins the game of chess.

Chess Tutorials on Quick and Easy Checkmates

Sunday, 28. June 2009

Chess is such a wonderful game of the mind. When played well, it can be a game of bravery and strategy that can leave the viewers breathless in the anticipation of your next movements. When played badly, some people will just have to struggle to be able to keep a wince off their face as you missed move after move until you lose the game.

These chess tutorials can be able to guide you of the two quick and easy ways to end the game of chess. They can be a great help when playing with less inexperienced chess player because both are neither foolproof. Moreover, to protect yourself from these strategies, you should focus and concentrate during the opening moves of the game play. Either color can use them. For easy understanding, let us assume that you are the white.

First is the four move checkmate. The first movement in the game is the most critical. Some chess player move out their knights to attack instantly while some others start with their bishops and rooks.

In this first checkmate tutorial, the first to move is the king’s pawn. Move it to one or two spaces yet, the safest is to only move it one space. This is noted as e2 to e3. The only space you need to acquire is f7, this is where the black king bishop’s pawn occupies. This will be your kill square. As long as you can successfully move to this square without being taken by your opponent, then your game play is shortly over.

The second and the third moves are interchangeable. Second move could be your queen moving diagonally on two spaces. She will then occupy the f3. It is very important that she is until your next two moves. Ensure that the f row path is clear from obstruction. Then, you move your king’s bishop. Move it for three spaces to c4. This placement is more vulnerable than f3 so it is advisable to make this your third move instead of the fourth movement. In your fourth move, move your queen to take the pawn at f7. This move should put the king in checkmate, unless the opposing queen has been moved.

The next checkmate tutorial is the five move checkmate. The five-move checkmate is harder to use than the four-move checkmate because of those extra combinations that incorporate with an allowed extra move. The first two opening moves are just the same with the four-move that is e7 – e6, d1 – f3. This leaves your queen ready to attack, protect her by the row of pawns standing behind her. Next, move your king’s knight, g1 to h3. Move again next, that same knight to g5 in your next turn. From here, you can move your queen to f7 and checkmate the opponent’s king.

Both of these checkmate style can be master by practicing them over and over again. These can be a great help for you in your future chess game plays.

Chess Weapons for Improving your Chess Game

Saturday, 27. June 2009

The chess game composed of many smaller battles that leads up to a one ultimate and final war where each player will struggle hard to eliminate the other’s king. In this article, you can learn some chess weapons that are commonly used to be able to reach your ultimate goal in the game of chess.

First weapon is called the pin and fork movement. The pin and fork movement is attained by pinning most of your opponent’s chess pieces where you can possibly attack those pinned chess pieces. This is a smart chess strategy but it takes a very careful and thorough study of the whole chess board to recognize that opportunity when it arises.

Next chess weapon is called deflection. This Kind of method is a turning away method where you will try to deflect the opponent’s defending chess pieces for you to be able to attack an important chess piece like the king or the queen. For instance, if the opposing queen is defending his king, then you will have to make a move that can be able to force the queen to move from her position of defense, thus leaving her king open for the opponent’s possible attack.

The chess weapon three is called the skewer. The skewer method is similar to the pin and fork, it can be used when the opposing chess piece are aligned with the most valuable chess piece being out front such as the king in positioned in front of the queen. When you force the king to move by putting him in check mode than the queen will be open for an attack. In most cases, that queen is captured and removes from the game. In this way, without the opponent’s most powerful chess piece, you can get great advantages of the game. However, be very careful in doing so, capturing his or her queen can also be a trap for you to lose the chess game.

Next of the chess weapon is called the discovered attack and check. The discovered attack can be seen when one of your chess pieces is moved and your next move was uncovered as an attack. One chess piece can be guarding a powerful piece like the queen, and then abruptly the queen can be seen with a direct advantage to threaten and attack the opponent’s chess piece. When this method causes you to check your opponent’s king then it is called discovered check.

The checkmate combination is another chess weapon you could use. You will use more than one chess strategy to be able to checkmate your opponent’s king. There are numerous possible combinations and each one will be based on the position and strength of your chess pieces that are attempting to attack.

There are some more chess weapons you could use beside the mentioned above. You just try to learn them and you can be set in your next chess match. You can have the heads up and advantages you need to be able to win the game.

One of the important things that you need to consider in playing the game of chess is that the player who controls the central squares of the chess board is the one who can be able to control the traffic between the two armies of 16 chess pieces. If you are somehow weak in the middle game then you are relatively to face a ferocious invasion soon enough from your opponent’s pieces. This is why, before starting a successful attack on the opposing player’s chess pieces, you need to get a firm foothold and firm control in the center of the board game.

As soon as the game starts, you should bring out your knights and bishops rapidly or as quickly as you can so that they can be positioned in the useful squares. You can always bring the knights out as early as the first move because they can jump over your other chess pieces in order to be free from the back row. Also, when you bring your knights and bishops quickly, you can perform the castle and defend your king more in the beginning of the game.

Do not rush any of your attacks without thinking and analyzing first the situation of your chess pieces in the chess board. Also, do not start an attack until you have moved and developed your chess pieces into useful positions where they can attack and defend as a team. Premature attacks always ruin your advantage in the chess game. Chess Tips for Open and Closed Opening Strategy

Saturday, 27. June 2009

There are numerous chess opening strategies in the chess game that you can effectively use. You can also develop your own opening strategies from those many strategies in the opening that will suit you. It will just depend on your own approach in the chess game whether you are an aggressive or a more defensive type chess player. Just choose which is the most comfortable strategy for you, and you are all set to play and be able to win in the end. Two of these opening strategies in the chess game are called the open and the closed.

The open strategy refers to the movement in the opening game where a player starts with moving his or her pawn in front of his king or the queen while the closed strategy refers to the movement in the opening game where a player starts to move the pawns that are located in front of his knights or rooks (pawns at the sides).

The open strategy is more of an offensive style rather than defensive. Using the open strategy in the opening game creates an aggressive and rapid trading of chess pieces with your opponent. Both you and your opponent will be able to create many open lanes that can be use to attack each other. This can lead to an either very quick defeat or very quick win for you. If your personality as a chess game player is more of a risk taker and aggressive type, this strategy can be suited for you. More often beginners use this strategy because of the early attacking of chess pieces.

The closed opening strategy is more on the defensive aspect of the game, just the opposite of the open strategy. As mentioned earlier, a closed opening is by moving the pawns on the sides of the chess board resulting in a defensive game play by you and the opposing player. In a closed strategy, much movement with your major chess pieces is also restricted.

Perhaps, if you are a beginner player to the chess game, you will choose the open strategy and learn more on the offensive plays in chess. As a matter of fact, beginners in chess game are very aggressive to win so they think that the easiest and quickest way to checkmate the king is by capturing more of the opponent’s chess pieces and attacking more the king until they have the chance to corner it. If you are a more experienced chess player, you can use the closed strategy since you are very much aware of the offensive style. A good defense can trick your opponent into your traps.

Regardless of all of these, you need to find a good balance in regards to the offensive and defensive strategies. Remember that a good balance is everything is very useful. Study and learn both offensive and defensive style and learn to apply them in certain situation in chess game. The good combination style of strategies can be your strength in every chess game you will play.
