FIDE’s credibility in the World of Chess
If you are planning to get a title in the world of Chess try applying in Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) or World Chess Federation. But the question is, is FIDE credible enough to organize world chess championship? FIDE or World Chess Federation is the international governing body of chess competitions founded on July 20, 1924. It aims to unite the various national chess federation around the world. It is the one responsible in organizing World Chess Tournaments. In some instances, FIDE’s credibility to organize World Championship was questioned. Even the reigning Grand Master Garry Kasparov unravels his displeasure to the process being implemented by the World Chess Federation. In Garry Kasparov’s displeasure, he withdraws his plan to play in Corus 2005. It is a bad news for the world of chess and to the fans of world’s number one chess player, Garry Kasparov. According to Garry, his life was put on hold for so many times because of the unification process being followed by the World Chess Federation. Garry questioned the credibility of the World Chess Federation to organize a world chess tournament. Gary also emphasized the failure of FIDE to organize a World Knockout Champion Kasimdzhanov. The process of FIDE had affected Kasparov’s life. Garry was unable to play in 2005 Corus super tournament at Wijk aan Zee.
Garry Kasparov was not the only one affected by unification process being implemented by the World Chess Federation. Even Susan Polgar was affected by the FIDE’s ability to organize a world chess championship. In early 1998, FIDE was unable to organized a World Championship title defense match from Susan Polgar against Xie Jun. Many months passed but the World Chess Federation failed to update the players on when the title defense match will happen. FIDE’s fault in organizing matches affected Polgar’s life. Polgar finally decided to build her own family by having a child of her own. The FIDE suddenly scheduled a match at the time of Susan Polgar’s delivery. The FIDE’s failure to give the six month notice triggers the players to question their credibility of the federation to organize a tournament. The players then noticed that Polgar was not given the six month notice as stated in FIDE’s published rules. Even the request of Susan Polgar to extend the date of the tournament for her to recover from giving birth was rejected by the FIDE. Many lives were affected by the abrupt decision of FIDE to organize a match. During the Corus 2005, Kasparov strongly expressed his desire to play. But due to the unreasonable manner of the World Chess Federation in organizing a match, Kasparov would rather choose his pride than playing. Kasparov’s spot in the World Chess Tournament in Corus 2005 was then offered to Judit Polgar. Susan Polgar suggested inviting the top three rated chess players to the World Championship title. She also mentioned the name of Kasparov, Anand, Leko and Kramnik as the top rated chess players in the world. Polgar also give emphasize on the division of earnings in the World Knockout Championship. Players suggested that the FIDE will follow a strict rating of players. If that happens, there will be no more whining or complaint or holding other players life for world championships.
