Despite of the fact that many nations are claiming to be the place of origin of the chess game, it is not really absolutely clear where actually it started. Although, most people believed that it has evolved from India’s chess-like games thousand years ago. Some said that the Persians are the one who created it, is not really clear but one thing is absolute that it is one of the oldest board game in the world.
Chess game is played by two competing players on the opposite side of the chess board containing 64 small squares with alternating colors. Both players have an equal amount of forces which are 16 chessmen: a king, a queen, two rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights, and eight of the pawns. The ultimate goal of the chess game is to checkmate or corner and captures the opposing player’s king and wins the game.
The initial position of the chess board must be that the light colored square must be at the bottom right hand side of both the players. All the chess pieces are assembled first in the same way every time a chess game starts. Rank is what we call the second row of the chess board where the 8 pawns are occupying the squares, while the first rank is occupied by the major chess pieces: rooks are in both corners, then the knights are placed next to them, bishops follow them and then the queen matching her own colored square and then the king.
The player who holds the white chess pieces are always the first one to move. It will be decided sometimes by flipping a coin or guessing what color of the pawn is hidden in one of the player’s hand. The turns are alternately, first the white moves, then the black, then white again, then black, and so on until one of the chess player wins the game.
Each of the chess pieces move differently. The pawn moves forward one square at a time except on their starting move where chess players can choose whether to move them in 2 spaces or just one space forward. Also, the capturing movement of pawn is diagonal but just in one space. The rooks can move in a straight line, either forward or backward, at any amount of squares unless they are obstructed by other chess pieces on the board. The bishops move diagonally at any number of spaces unless also another chess piece blocks its path. The knights move in an “L” shape movement and can jump over from another chess pieces. The queen, can move with all these directions except the “L” shape of the knights. Lastly, the king can move one space in any direction, one step at a time.
There are many more to learn in chess rules so you must take sometime to learn them all for a successful chess game.
