BRIDGEND CHESS CLUB
Monday, 6. July 2009
This club was formed during 1968 and it progressed well from starting and bagged many titles and championships as it joined the East Glamorgan Chess League. This club has many chess teams and they played in the First division from 1968-1995 and also bagged eight chess league titles during the year 1975-1976 and 1991 and 1992. Then they suffered a back drop in their league table position by losing their First Division spot and went down to Second Division. But the senior players will fight back and regain their First Division Spot by getting championship in Second Division. These kinds of losing the First Division standings and bouncing back occurred recently in 2007 and also it happened in 1995 and 2001. They are not only champions with Bridgend A team but also with their Bridgend B, C and D.
They also arrange some kind of exhibition for the players in the club with some great players. In 1993 English Grandmaster Murray Chandler visited the club and gave tips to players and also IM Andrew Martin visited the club during the past. All these kind of activities thrills the players and give some enthusiasm to them to shine well.
Bridgend Chess Club conducts many tournaments for juniors and by that it identifies young talents and trains them well to reach higher level. Like above said they are conducting Bridgend junior Rapidplay in search of young talents. They also conduct tournaments for all such as Bridgend Club Championship.
