Athenaeum chess club is an UK based chess club. It was inaugurated in the year 1873. This club also has a reputation of being the oldest club in United Kingdom which is still functioning well. It is located in Covent Garden which is based in central London. At present it comprises of forty members. Members are from various categories ranging from professionals to amateurs.

They participate and compete in various competitions which are conducted in and around London. These competitions include the London league, the Middlesex league. They also participate in various Banks and Insurance competitions. They also conduct in-house competitions for their members. Those competitions are conducted twice per week especially on Mondays and on Wednesdays. Usually these in-house competitions start around 6.45 pm on the scheduled day.

Athenaeum chess club actively participates in the prestigious London League. Athenaeum chess club sends four teams to participate in the London League. Division 1 comprises of the first and second team. The remaining two teams would participate in Division 4.

The playing rate is classified as follows, for home matches the game has to cease with 36 moves which must be completed within 90 minutes, further a 15 minute quick play finish is provided. For away games the game has to end with the maximum of 30 moves completed within 75 minutes, further a 15 minute quick play finish is provided. In the Middlesex league Athenaeum chess club plays two teams in second Division. Similar amount of rate of play is regulated for this league also.
